30 min. long collaboration projct

so.. I decided to do take a photo of me doing same things in different t-shirt. t-shirt means a lot to me because my clothes are mostly t-shirt. I wear them and rotate the order of the t-shirt every week.  I don’t like shopping but I would love to buy different t-shirt. so this is about me loving t-shirt. simply.

2. Cut out projecct

for this project, I had to cut anything to make a self-portrait, so I decided to print my old comics from last semester on colored paper and cut them out. Every different layer contains different kinds of comics so it is important to look closer..  this was my favorite work of the semester.

3. Material project

My least favorite..but my teacher liked it : P.

project was making self-portrait by using particular material.

I used tea leaves to cover a reflective tea cup and named it as “every day tea”

4. Body Project

I have always wanted to be buff, (not like guys tho..) so I exaggerated the idea of me being buff.  My good friend Ray was very nice enough to let me cast his body..so I did and I wore it as if it was my real body and showing of my muscles.

5. Final Projct

I combined Cut out project and Body project, because they were my favorites. so I made “comic” story about me wanting to be buff. as you can see it’s a sad ending because becoming buff as a female is not easy, and people do not feel attractive from buff women. well, I don’t want to be that buff like a guys but I like to be strong.. most girls don’t understand and I admit that I have different standard.

it took a lot of effort and time.. it was worth it

It was due two weeks before the due date of Research studio’s final project, but I forgot to post on my blog, so here I am, posting about my wonderful pedestal project.

Well, the assignment was make a 3D object with pedestal. So what you were supposed to do was make a sculpture and design the your own pedestal that goes well with the actual sculpture.  I fully understood the assignment on the critique day, after I saw all my classmate’s work.  I was the only one who built the actual, literal pedestal in the class. Everyone else (except one other classmate) made the pedestal into the sculpture, and borrowed the actual, rectangular pedestal from somewhere else, maybe from FYP.

And here it is, the work in progress of my beautiful pedestal, in woodshop.

starting from measuring, cutting woods and gluing them together and shooting nail gun was not simple tasks that you could finish in one sitting. All those work took me all the free times through out the whole week, and I finished painting it the day before the critique day. Which was not a great thing because I still had to make my actual sculpture piece. It was good thing that I had an idea what I was going to do.

here is my pedestal, behind my research class room, and it was painted in egg shell white color. hmm..what’s all that egg trays in the back? oops, that was my  huge cinnamon roll project. yes, I had to torn that apart that day before it gets fully destroyed before.

For the sculpture, we were supposed to pick an object and create something out of it, or recreate with different object.  This assignment was given after the Huge Cinnamon Roll Project, and I had some left over egg cartons from it. Therefore all I could think of was egg carton, and I decided to recreate egg carton with a cloth and some cottons.

We were supposed to make an mind map, and my mind map lead me into the word, Couch, from an egg carton. the reason was, since egg carton protects from egg to break, it must be very steady, and comfy.  What is comfortable? when I thought of the word comfyness (which is not a word..haha) I always thought of the couch in our house in NY. so I decided to make a couch for the egg.  Which is egg carton that is very coushiony. (actually one of my teacher also suggested make a sofa for an egg. it was a good call: ) )

so now, here it is, my egg and egg couch and my beautiful pedestal.

I know that it does not look like an cushion, or couch at all.  Believe me, I spent whole night struggling with sewing machine, which I never used it before,  to create this some… creature. I was embarrassed when I put that in the middle of the class room and compared with other sculptures.  Mine looked like a joke, because I knew that it took only a night to finished it. And I felt like I was such an idiot because I spent too much time on building the pedestal, which you could have just borrowed from FYP office.

But when everyone started to talk about my piece, I was very surprised and became delighted because they said my sculpture looked like a Tim Button’s creature.  They said my “egg carton”(supposedly..) seems as if it is alive and would start walk around the class. And when they found out that I made a pedestal and applied same color as an egg on the top of the creature, they even gave me applause.  I was shocked, and rather relived that many of them liked my piece.. Laura, our instructor even mentioned that she could see the care of my sewing process.

I learned one few things from this project.. I was lucky this time, but next time, I would not be lucky as this time, so I should read the assignment more carefully and not do the work at the last minutes.

by the way, I enjoyed sewing them together.. maybe I might make my own pillow next time..; )

This project was assigned with a short paper about what I believe.  To begin with this project, I had to write about what I believed.  I struggled with having specific and unique idea of what I believed in, so I just had to come up with the simplest belief that I have believed for a long time: if you are optimist, your life will be better.  After I wrote the paper about this, I felt like I’m writing about something that seems really lame and generous.  Fortunately, Steven liked my paper and told me this belief matches with my personality very well.  with his encouragement, I had to come up with some idea of the way I could express my belief through the art work.  Steven suggested that I should make a comic book, or I should say graphic novel just like I did with my first project.  He thinks I was born to draw graphic novel, and he wanted me to make my own first book.   was very fascinated by his suggestion, and I did not mind drawing comics, so I decided to do it.

I decided to draw two different perspective from two different people,  and compare how they embrace problems or events with different solutions.  I had to design a format of the book to show two different stories, so what I did was connect two books.. it is hard to explain, so I will just start explain as go through the pictures of my comics.

to read this drawing, pretend there is a black line in the middle of the drawing, and read the left side of the black line form left to right, and right side of the black line from right to left, just like reading a Japanese Manga. if this make any sense.. that would be great but if you don’t follow this instruction, there is nothing better explanation than this.. ah I blame my lack of language.

so what I tried to do was putting them in same problems, of some unpleasant event and show how they deal with different point of view. I put them in to mirrored image so readers can compare them as they read the book.

for instance, here, I demonstrated a general idea of both optimist’s and pessimist’s behavior towards to a lot of work.  Pessimist would say “oh I would never finish this much work” while optimist would say “I can do this. I will do my best!.”

sometime when I walk down the street, there are few people make my day by smiling at me when we have eye contact, and few people makes my feel bad who walk with frowned face.

in this page, they meet each other, and happy one smiles at mad one and mad one stops  and looking back at happy one and wondering why everyone has to be happy but him. and that thought makes him more miserable.  it is always that way.

the last page of the book.. pessimist one has this desire to kill the optimist one.  Steven actually mentioned that the pessimist one should kill the optimist one at the end of the book, but I was not sure about that ending.. haha but it would have been funny.

It was my first try of book binding and I had to satisfied with what I got. it looked good until we had critique but if fell apart the following day, and I did not have chance to take a photo of inside.  I will make a better one later, I should say, a stronger one.

I love this photo.. he was telling us to gather around for the story time.

we looked through the book one page at a time. he liked it. that’s all mattered to me:) I liked it too except the fact that it took me forever to make the comic into the book and was destroyed after the critique.. but it was worth it to put all my energy into this project.  It was great class, and I am going to miss it. definitely.
